Touch

I love my iPod Touch! Instead of killing time reading true crime and self-help books on the metro, I can now play with music apps and indulge my creative side before spending the day in a windowless beige cubicle. I later develop the rough ideas by connecting the Touch to my Line 6 Toneport and recording the tracks into REAPER so I can refine the arrangement and add effects. The apps I have used so far are FingerBeat, NESynth, iSyn, iDrum, Mega Synth, and Wave Synth and the result is the ALP release "Touch". Buy the 30 minute audio file from Tradebit.

This has not been a good week for me on the digital discography front. First of all, an artist I remixed a few years ago has requested I taker her remixes down from iTunes, which has led to the unfortunate discovery that it is harder to remove tracks than it is to submit them. And even more difficult is trying to sell stuff at a discount! I see that iTunes is listing my new release Touch as an album and not a single which means the price is 10x what I intended. I have written e-mails to two vendors to sort this stuff out. In the meantime, you can get Touch, a 30 minute mp3 file created on iPhone apps, for $1 at tradebit. Read more here. UPDATE: Apparently iTunes prices any track longer than 10 minutes as an album. And I have to take down Pursuit of Happiness and re-release it as opposed to just being able to remove the remixes. I've added a bonus track and it is being remastered as I type.

Crappy is the New Lo-Fi

I have always wanted to have video accompaniment at my gigs, but considered this an unattainable dream. Even though projectors have come down in price considerably, the replacement bulbs are exorbitantly priced (seemingly in accordance with the cheap printer/expensive toner cartridge economic model). However, woot.com recently sold the Torpedo for $69, an item that Gizmodo, the gadget blog, characterized as "The World's Crappiest Projector." The projector is marketed primarily for kids to project video games. Demos posted by helpful YouTubers convinced me that despite the bad reviews, $69 might be a worthwhile expenditure provided I managed my expectations.

Would you want to use this projector for a mission critical Power Point presentation in a semi-lit room? No. But it performed much better than expected given the cheap price tag and even cheaper replacement bulb costs. In fact the projector uses halogen track lighting bulbs that can be found at the supermarket or on ebay for under $10. They aren't the brightest bulbs, but they are affordable and readily attainable. I was able to score a cheap DVD player at Radio Shack in time for my first multimedia gig. Unfortunately a skylight initially interfered with my video debut, but once night fell, the Torpedo did a great job of projecting my lo-fi stream of consciousness mashups on the wall behind me. I recommend this for multimedia on a shoestring budget!

Exciting New Gear Part 1

An evening of hunching over my laptop during a gig sent me on a search for a computer stand to help my posture, which led to one of the most practical yet exciting gear expenditures I have made this decade. Although the name itself was reason enough to justify its purchase, the Stanton Uberstand has become an indispensable part of my rig. It elevates the laptop to eye level, provides a shelf for an audio interface, and makes room for a midi controller below. With the resulting tabletop space I can monitor my Petcam via my netbook. The Uberstand folds into its own nylon bag for easy transport. The only drawback is that a cable tie is required to keep the shelf from toppling over. The solid metal construction nevertheless conveys stability. I consider the Uberstand a must-have for the laptop musician--the $79 price tag is much less than a bill from the chiropractor!

Christopher Moscatiello did the sound design and used one of my tracks, "Yeah Baby," in a lesbian club scene, accompanied by samples of a drunk woman at a party.

The ninth installment of Queering Sound again gathers together local, national and international artists - with a non-exclusive curatorial focus towards gay, lesbian and post-gender-identified participants - who explore alternative avenues of expression through sound, the digital arts, noise and spoken word; two nights of both established and upcoming local talents as well as serve to introduce Washington audiences to new sounds and visions from across the globe through digital contributions.

Compact discs, recordings, and other merchandise from contributors and performers will also be available for sale. ALP will have an EP preview of the upcoming CD Give It for sale.

WAMMIES

Last night I got to perform at the Washington Area Music Awards. One of my favourite production clients, Cletus and Lori, invited me to play live on one of their tracks for which I had done loops and programs. The laptop and midi controller shtick went over really well considering that just less than two decades ago my synth pop band was routinely heckled for using a drum machine. The ALP CD Brief Episodes of Joy got the WAMMIE for electronica recording. You can get it on iTunes here.

The mega-talented Canadian filmmaker Shawn Postoff features the ALP track "Afterglow" in "To Suffer is to Slip Unnoticed," the latest episode in his series of smart, funny, non-mainstream gay erotica film-poems inspired by the Psalms. "Afterglow" starts in at around seven minutes, but you need to watch this clip from the beginning for full effect!!
